313 Day "City of Stars"

curated and hosted by Oshun Williams, Joe Cazeno III, and Kya Shipman

In Detroit, March 13 isn’t just a date, it’s a declaration. Known as 313 Day, a nod to the city’s iconic area code, it stands as a cultural holiday rooted in pride, creativity, and community. Each year, Detroiters show up for themselves, and this year was no exception.

On a cold March evening, artists Oshun Williams and Joe Cazeno III brought that spirit to life with City of Stars, an art exhibition held in Eastern Market. The result was a powerful gathering that celebrated the depth, range, and brilliance of Detroit’s creative scene.

The exhibition featured a dynamic roster of artists, including Sheefy McFly, Phil Simpson, Sydney James, and a host of others shaping the visual language of the city. Their work transformed the space into a living archive of Detroit’s artistic pulse.

But beyond the artwork, it was the energy of the crowd that defined the night. Hundreds filled the venue, with a line stretching out the door despite the cold. Friends, families, and supporters came together in a collective act of showing up, reinforcing the strength of Detroit’s creative marketplace. This wasn’t just attendance; it was participation in something larger.

Inside, the experience extended beyond the walls. Guests engaged in a fluid environment of conversation, connection, and collaboration, creating an ecosystem where disciplines overlapped and creativity moved freely. Food, drinks, and music carried the night, while brands like Detroit Vs Everybody anchored the event in the city’s broader cultural identity.

A standout moment came through a custom-built gallery wall by Duffe, a non-profit owned by Kya Shipman, which evolved into a community mural over the course of the evening. Artists and attendees alike contributed to the piece, turning spectators into collaborators. The result was a living, breathing artwork that embodied the spirit of the night, collective, expressive, and unapologetically Detroit.

With support from Rémy Martin, the evening carried both polish and authenticity, bridging legacy and emerging voices seamlessly.

For Three One Magazine, the night was more than an event. It was an opportunity to document, connect, and amplify. Through interviews and photography, we captured moments with featured artists and attendees, preserving a snapshot of a night that felt both immediate and lasting.

City of Stars wasn’t just a celebration of art. It was a reminder of what happens when a city believes in its creatives. And in Detroit, that belief continues to show up, loudly.
